Chapter 18

The following morning Dan and Owen boarded the Cessna for the five hour flight between Nassau and St. Thomas. Dan was confident in his navigational skills, but the GPS navigational system in the Caravan took all the work out of the over-water flight. A five hour flight is long in any airplane as is a single leg of 920 miles especially over the open ocean. The two men were prepared with bottled water, Cokes and sandwiches in a cooler, strapped into a passenger seat behind the cockpit. Dan had tuned in a satellite radio station in case they ran out of conversation on the long trip.

After flying two hours over the Atlantic Ocean Owen was bored and sleepy, moved his seat aft to keep his feet away from the rudder pedals, and went to sleep. Dan smiled at his ease and peace. It had never been that easy for him to fall asleep. Owen slept for nearly two hours. Islands were appearing on the horizon in several directions when he awoke.

“Where are we?” he asked, stretching his arms and back.

“Less than an hour out. I’ll be entering controlled airspace soon and will have to report in. We’ll be in U.S. territory in a few minutes.”

Minutes later Dan contacted Cyril E. King International Airport to report his arrival. The last thirty minutes of the flight was busy for the pilot. He was given clearance to one of the runways and a radio frequency to switch to after landing. The runway was very long prompting Dan to ask permission to land long, reducing his taxi time by several minutes. Permission was given and upon touchdown he was instructed to change to ground frequency. Ground control gave him instructions to transient parking and informed him U.S. Customs officials would meet them at the parking area. He was to have his passport ready when they arrived. The official welcome back to the U.S. was short and painless. The customs official walked the men to the entry gate and wished them a nice day.

Dan waved down a taxi and asked him to take the main highway to a nice hotel near the airport. It was only a few short blocks from the hotel to the Banco Popular De Puerto Rico on Charlotte Amalie Road. Dan had been here many times before to deposit cash into his personal numbered account at the bank. The manager in the bank knew him by sight, but he had never developed a friendship with the man. That may all change today when his deposit of one hundred ten million dollars was added to his account. That should be enough to impress even this snobbish man.

Dan lay on the bed and napped for an hour. When he arose he showered and put on his suit once again. It was now late afternoon. He called a taxi to take him the short distance to the bank and asked Owen to wait in the roomuntil he returned.

The deposit could not readily be traced because of the number status of the account and Dan felt safe entering the public building.
